School Sores (Impetigo)
This is a highly contagious and unsightly skin infection caused by bacteria.
These are generally not sore, but are usually itchy.
Time from exposure to illness (incubation period): 4–10 days.
Signs and symptoms
- Small, red spots, usually around the mouth or nose and hands.
- These are generally not sore, but are usually itchy.
- They quickly form blisters or sores, which get bigger, become filled with pus, then burst and weep.
- The wet, red skin dries and crusts over. The scabs later fall off and the skin heals in a few days.
See a doctor for treatment.
At home
- Treat as recommended by your doctor.
- Cover with clean dressing.
- Keep your child away from school or day care centre until the blisters have dried out.
