How is pain management determined in OA?
Key goals: reduced pain intensity, improved function and minimised side effects1
Considerations for medication selection:
Individuals with OA are often older with comorbidities2
Concomitant medications, due to potential for drug‐drug interactions (DDIs)2
Factors affecting adherence (e.g. frequency of dosing and side effects)3,4
Core non‐pharmaceutical management recommendations include exercise, maintaining a healthy weight and patient education.2,5-11
Suitability profile of paracetamol
When used as directed on the label:
Excellent gastrointestinal tolerance 12,13
Very low risk of renal or hepatic side effects 13
Paracetamol should be used with caution in patients with renal or hepatic impairment.14 As with all medications, patients regularly using paracetamol should be medically monitored.11,13
