German Measles (Rubella)
Time from exposure to illness (incubation period): 14–21 days.
Signs and symptoms
- Starts with a headache, sore throat, runny nose, fever, aches and pains.
- Small pink spots appear on the face and rapidly spread over the body.
- The rash usually lasts only a few days.
See your doctor first for an accurate diagnosis. They will need to report any outbreaks to the local Public Health Unit so other people who might be infected can be contacted.
Treatment at home
- Give paracetamol for fever and pain.
- Make sure your child has lots of rest.
- Keep them away from others for at least 4 days after the rash appears, or until they are fully recovered. People who have been in contact don't need to stay home.
Note: Pregnant women should see a doctor immediately.
