Mumps
Time from exposure to illness (incubation period): 14–21 days.
Signs and symptoms
- Painful, sore, swollen areas around the jawline from ears to neck.
- They may also have a high fever, headache and vomiting.
See your doctor first for an accurate diagnosis. They will need to report any outbreaks to the local Public Health Unit so other people who might be infected can be contacted.
Treatment at home
- Paracetamol for fever and pain.
- Give lots of rest, soft foods (like ice cream and jelly) and cool drinks.
Infectious period
Your child can be infectious for 6 days before the swelling appears so inform the parents of any children they may have been playing with in the last 6 days. Those who have been in contact with your child don't need to stay home. Keep your child away from others for at least 9 days after the swelling starts or until they are fully recovered.
